Hold down the Shift Key to get a straight line for both the Brush and Pencil tools!

 

You can create your own brushes by selecting the objects you want to use as a brush and open the Brushes Panel and selecting new Brush Icon

Live Paint requires you to select the objects first and then color them without accidentally coloring another object. You can use the arrow keys to select different color swatches.
